Season auditions for Asian Story Theater’s 2021-22 season, including 3 productions planned for a combination of in-person and online presentation, are being scheduled May 8-9-10 via Zoom. The projects require a diverse cast, any age from 5 to 105. Most roles require some musical skills, which can be vocal or instrumental. Note that several in-person rehearsals in an open outdoor space will be required. All performers will receive a stipend for rehearsals and performances.
The three shows include THE GOLDEN RULE, a play with music about new Californians come for the Gold Rush, from China, Hawaii, and as a slave from the American south. The second is a new musical: NOT-WORKING, about essential, displaced, and forgotten workers in the time of Covid-19. A creative collaboration with Teatro Máscara Mágica and the San Diego Black Ensemble Theatre, premiering in the summer of 2022–with some musical previews well before that. And finally, WHEN THE TIGER SMOKED A PIPE, a family-friendly fable based on Korean folk tales about the powerful Tiger and the clever Magpie. Scheduled to premiere with the Lunar New Year in February 2022, this show will incorporate elements of p’ansori, a Korean musical tradition of singing and storytelling that calls for raucous audience participation.
To schedule an audition for any of these projects, email a resume and photo, as well as your availability May 8-9-10, 2021 to INFO@ASIANSTORYTHEATER.ORG. We will respond with a proposed audition time. Though online auditions are preferred, we will also schedule a limited number of in-person auditions on TUESDAY, May 11, between 4-7pm in Balboa Park.
